Commentary

Green's interlinear Greek New Testament Third Edition has wrong the Strong's number with 848 for 846 αὐτῆς. Zodhiates also makes this mistake in his The Complete Word Study New Testament.

Green's interlinear Greek New Testament Third Edition has wrong the Strong's number with 2588 for 3588 οἱ.

Scrivener deletes τῇ in the phrase ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ, which the KJV translators used for "the" in the phrase in the truth. The NKJV following Scrivener has "in truth" omitting "the" and slightly changing the meaning.

Et natis) Καὶ τοῖς τέϰνοις. Cur non potius ‘filiis’? Sequitur enim οὓς, id est ‘quos’, masculino genere, cum τέϰνα sit neutri generis. Poterat vertere ‘liberis’ potius quam natis, quae vox poetarum magis est. In eo ambuletis) ῞Ινα ἐν αὐτῇ περιπατῆτε, id est ‘vt in eo ambuletis’. Sed vt eo referat mandatum non Deum.

Exierunt) Εἰσῆλϑον, id est ‘introierunt’.

Mercedem plenam accipiatis) ᾽Απολάβωμεν, id est ‘accipiamus’.

Transated as:

ON THE SECOND EPISTLE OF JOHN

“Et natis) Καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις.

Why not rather ‘sons’ (filiis)? For the word οὓς, meaning ‘whom’, follows, and it is masculine in gender, whereas τέκνα is of the neuter gender.

He could have translated it as ‘children’ (liberis) rather than natis, since that word (natis) is more poetic in character.

In eo ambuletis) ῞Ινα ἐν αὐτῇ περιπατῆτε: that is, “that you may walk in it.”

But the phrase “in it” (eo) should refer to the commandment, not to God.

Exierunt) Εἰσῆλθον: that is, “they entered.”

Mercedem plenam accipiatis) ᾽Απολάβωμεν: that is, “that we may receive.”

Qui recedit.) ῾Ο παραβαίνων: that is, “he who transgresses” (or, “he who goes beyond”).

Ecce praedixi vobis, vt in die Domini non confundamini.)

I do not find these words in the Greek manuscript.
