- 1 But Job answered and said,
- 1 “Oh that my grief would be thoroughly weighed, and my misfortune laid with it on the scales!
- 1 Because then it would be heavier than the sand of the sea, for this reason my words are swallowed.
- 1 Because the arrows of the Almighty are within me, my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
- 1 Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the Ox low over his fodder?
- 1 Can flavourless food be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
- 1 These things that my soul refuses to touch are like food that brings misery.
- 1 “Oh that I might have my request, and that God would grant me the thing that I hope for!
- 1 That it would please God to destroy me, and that He would loose His hand, and cut me off!
- 10 Then I would still have comfort; yes, I would harden myself in sorrow, let Him not spare me; because I have not hidden the words of the Holy One.
- 1 “What strength do I have, that I should hope? And what is my end, that I should prolong my life?
- 1 Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh bronze?
- 1 Is my help no longer in me? And is wisdom driven far from me?
- 1 To him who is afflicted pity should be shown from his friend; but he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
- 1 My brethren have dealt deceitfully like a brook, and like the stream of brooks they pass away,
- 1 Which are dark because of the ice, into which the snow vanishes.
- 1 When it is warm, they vanish; when it is hot, they vanish out of their place.
- 1 The paths of their way are turned aside, they lead to nowhere and perish.
- 19 The caravans of Tema looked, the travellers of Sheba hoped for them.
- 1 They were disappointed because they had hoped; they came there and were ashamed.
- 1 Because now you are nothing, you see my dismay and are afraid.
- 1 Did I ever say, ‘Bring something to me?’ Or, ‘Give a bribe for me from your wealth?’
- 1 Or, ‘Deliver me from the enemy’s hand?’ Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors?
- 1 “Teach me, and I will hold my tongue, cause me to understand how I have erred.
- 1 How forceful are correct words! But what does your arguing prove?
- 1 Do you intend to rebuke my words, and the speech of one that is desperate, which are like wind?
- 1 Yes, you overwhelm the fatherless, and you dig a hole for your friend.
- 1 Now therefore be pleased to look at me; because it is obvious to you if I lie.
- 1 Come back, I ask you, let it not be sin; yes, come back again, my righteousness is in it.
- 1 Is there sin in my tongue? Cannot my taste discern perverse things?
