It is claimed that Erasmus directly stated that he used one manuscript for the book of Revelation. This manuscript is claimed to be Minuscule 2814.
John David Michaelis as translated by Herbert Marsh noted: “Erasmus relates in his defence adversus Stunicam, that he used only one single manuscript of the Revelation for his edition of the New Testament” (Introduction to the NT, Vol. II, p. 312).
Robert Waltz wrote: “Noteworthy primarily as the single Greek manuscript used by Erasmus to prepare the Apocalypse of his 1516 New Testament” (Encyclopedia of NT Textual Criticism, p. 1037).
Isbon Beckwith wrote: “Cursive no. 1, of the 12th or 13th century containing the Apocalypse, with the commentary of Andreas, is of particular interest, since it was the only Greek Ms. which Erasmus had for the Apocalypse in his first edition of the Greek Testament (1516)“ (Apocalypse of John, p. 412).
KJV advocate Thomas Holland wrote: “The manuscript Codex 1r used by Desiderius Erasmus in the production of his Greek New Testament is missing the last six verses of Revelation chapter twenty-two” (Crowned With Glory, p. 168).
Jan Krans maintained that this manuscript had some other omissions in its text, noting: “Some striking examples, by no means exhaustive, of omissions in min. 2814 that are restored by Erasmus” on the basis of the Latin Vulgate include phrases or clauses at Revelation 2:2, 2:17, 2:20, 3:12, 6:11, 22:11 (Beyond What is Written, p. 54, footnote 7).
There are a few arguments or counterpoints scholars and defenders have raised against the claim that Erasmus only used one manuscript (GA 2814) for Revelation in his 1516 edition. While most scholars are in general agreement that GA 2814 was the primary source, the following are arguments that suggest he may have had access to other sources or used other methods to supplement his text.
Erasmus may have had multiple Greek sources but used one main copy. Erasmus himself says in his annotations that he had trouble finding any Greek manuscripts of Revelation, but this doesn't mean he had only one. Erasmus said he got a copy "with difficulty" from Johann Reuchlin, which is said to be identified today with GA 2814. But his annotations suggest he compared his text with other readings. In the Annotationes, Erasmus sometimes discusses variant readings in Revelation, which would imply awareness of more than one source. For example, in Revelation 17:8, he comments on differences between the Greek and the Latin. Some argue this indicates he had more than one Greek text or at least some comparative material.
It is a common anecdote that Erasmus only used one mss for Revelation. The ms Delitzsch found is probably not the one Erasmus used. How were six verses missing at the end missing when Erasmus said only amended a “few words” from the Latin, (not 136 words). He also spotted parablepsis in verse 19 in the Greek which would be impossible if he lacked 16-22. So it is suspect from the start which leads to illogical conclusions.
Erasmus was well connected. He had access to scholarly networks (e.g., Reuchlin, Oecolampadius, and others) and could have consulted other partial or unclassified manuscripts, or asked for readings from others. Reuchlin had more than one Greek manuscript, although only 2814 seems to have been lent to Erasmus.
Erasmus said in Revelation 1:6
