Etymology
From Latin paenultimus, from paene (“almost”) + ultimus (“last”).

(UK, in US usage usually formal, literary or scholarly) Next to last, second to last; immediately preceding the end of a sequence, list, etc. (linguistics) Of or pertaining to a penult.
