The Bible Society NSW was formed through an Act of the NSW Parliament in 1817, following the forming of the British and Foreign Bible Society in London in 1804. Bible Society NSW was the first auxiliary branch in the Pacific region of the Bible Society. The charter was signed by Governor Lachlan Macquarie.

Bible Society NSW is part of the United Bible Societies They operate a bookshop at 213 Clarence Street, Sydney.

They used to support the King James Bible and versions from the Textus Receptus, but they now favor modern versions based on Westcott and Hort's Greek text.
