- 1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
- 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
- 3 in accordance as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who has called us to glory and virtue,
- 4 by which are given to us exceptionally great and precious promises, that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
- 5 But next to this also, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge,
- 6 and to knowledge self control, and to self control perseverance, and to perseverance godliness,
- 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
- 8 Because if these things are in you and abound, they make you that you will not be barren or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 9 But he that lacks these things is short sighted and blind, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
- 10 Therefore instead brethren, be diligent to make your calling and election sure, because if you do these things, you will never stumble;
- 11 because then an entrance will be provided for you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
- 12 Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them and be established in the present truth.
- 13 Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you,
- 14 knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me.
- 15 Moreover I will be careful to make certain that you always have these things in remembrance after my decease.
- 16 Because we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
- 17 Because He received from God the Father honour and glory when a voice came to him from the Excellent Glory: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
- 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
- 19 And so we have a additional confirmed word of prophecy, which you do well to observe as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the day star rises in your hearts:
- 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation.
- 21 because in ancient times the prophecy did not come by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
