θεος
God is often changed to "he" or "who" in most modern translations. This is because in some Greek manuscripts the word Theós (θεος) in Greek capitals (θEOΣ) was shortened to make room, and was written as θΣ with a line above it (and sometimes without one in it OΣ). Without the line above it (or in it), OΣ simply means "who". In one manuscript, Codex Alexandrinus the line faded, although history testifies that the line was there. and also there are well over 300 other manuscripts that contain the horizontal lines, and which therefore testify unmistakably to Theos, or "God", it is omitted and replaced for "he" or "who". Because it is impossible for Greek grammar to support these later conclusions, it has been theorised that this portion of scripture is a hymnic quotation, thus creating what is known as the Hymn Theory. While he NKJV may not change the word it does imply that verse is a hymn, thus giving credence to the false notion.
John Burgon said:
“The fact remains for all that, that the original reading of A is attested so amply, that no sincere lover of Truth can ever hereafter pretend to doubt it... it is too late by 150 years to contend on the negative side of the question... The plain fact concerning Cod. A is this - That at 1 Tim. iii. 16, two delicate horizontal strokes in THEOS which were thoroughly patent in 1628, which could be seen plainly down to 1737, and which were discernible by an expert (Dr. Woide) so late as A.D. 1765, have for the last hundred years entirely disappeared, which is precisely what Berriman in 1741 predicted would be the case.” Revision Revised, 432-436
Theodore Beza
When specifically referencing the text with word God, Theodore Beza stated:
- "There is scarcely another passage in which all the mysteries of our redemption are explained so magnificently or so clearly."
Bruce Metzger's 'evidence'
Metzger:
- ...since the neuter relative pronoun ὅ must have arisen as a scribal correction of ὅς (to bring the relative into concord with μυστήριον)....[1]
Notice that this is first of all an acknowledgment of the Greek solecism. The lack of any sensible concord for the hanging masculine relative pronoun. And a de facto acknowledgment of a feeble text (ie. not inspired by God) taken in by the hortians. And the blunder ὅς in the Metzger economy was immediately being corrected by scribes in the 1st and 2nd centuries ... in time for all the versional translations. (Then the ὃ was some how reverting back to ὅς being more common, yet both are ultra-minority.)
Metzger:
- ...the witnesses that read ὅ (D* itd, g, 61, 86 vg Ambrosiaster Marius Victorinus Hilary Pelagius Augustine) also indirectly presuppose ὅς as the earlier reading...[1]
This is circular to the hortian assumption that ὅς was 1st-century autographic. If ὅ was Paul's writing (Grotius, Newton, Wetstein and others) then it is invalid, since it is easy to see that being modified either accidentally or purposefully. (e.g. a scribe thinking .. why have "mystery" as what was manifested, that is strange, must be wrong, I'll fix it). And if θεός or ΘΣ was Paul's writing, then the corruption to ὅ could easily occur directly without coming from ὅς. Even more so if mss were written with ΘΣ (nomina sacra).
Metzger got this concept from Westcott & Hort:
The New Testament in the Original Greek (1881) Westcott & Hort
- "The Western ὅ is a manifest correction of ὅς , intended to remedy the apparent breach of concord between the relative and τὸ μυστήριον ... the change from ὅς to θεός would be facilitated, if it was not caused, by the removal of an apparent solecism ...."
George Vance Smith
Many agree that the grammar with the corruption is a solecism. The Unitarian reviser (with ebionite leanings) who was on Westcott and Hort's New Testament committee said:
... clearly no supporter of "God was manifest in the flesh" .... wrote that ὅς is "difficult, and hardly admissible" as referring to mystery (the closest antecedent and adopted by many of the scholars working with the corruption.) Then Smith goes to "Christ" as the subject almost by default, despite the fact that this is strained, unnatural and far afield.

"The reading which, on the basis of external evidence and transcriptional probability, best explains the rise of the others is ὅς. It is supported by the earliest and best uncials (א* A*vid C* Ggr) as well as by 33 365 442 2127 syrhmg, pal goth ethpp Origenlat Epiphanius Jerome Theodore Eutheriusacc. to Theodoret Cyril Cyrilacc. to Ps-Oecumenius Liberatus. Furthermore, since the neuter relative pronoun ὅ must have arisen as a scribal correction of ὅς (to bring the relative into concord with μυστήριον), the witnesses that read ὅ (D* itd, g, 61, 86 vg Ambrosiaster Marius Victorinus Hilary Pelagius Augustine) also indirectly presuppose ὅς as the earlier reading. Thus, no uncial (in the first hand) earlier than the eighth or ninth century (Ψ) supports θεός; all ancient versions presuppose ὅς or ὅ; and no patristic writer prior to the last third of the fourth century testifies to the reading θεός. The reading θεός arose either (a) accidentally, through the misreading of ος as ΘΣ, or (b) deliberately, either to supply a substantive for the following six verbs, or, with less probability, to provide greater dogmatic precision."
