- 1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities.
- 2 Now when John had heard in the prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
- 3 And said to Him, “Are You He who should come, or do we look for another?”
- 4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and show John again those things which you hear and see:
- 5 The blind receive their sight and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
- 6 And blessed is he, who is not offended because of Me.”
- 7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
- 8 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in fine clothing? Behold, those who wear fine clothing are in kings’ houses.
- 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
- 10 Because, this is he, of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’
- 11 “Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than him.
- 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
- 13 Because, all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
- 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.
- 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
- 16 But to what will I liken this generation? It is likened to children sitting in the marketplaces, and calling to their friends,
- 17 and saying: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we have mourned to you, and you did not lament.’
- 18 Because, John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
- 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold a gluttonous man, and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children.”
- 20 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent:
- 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! Because, if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
- 22 But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.
- 23 And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to hell; because, if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
- 24 But I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
- 25 At that time Jesus responded and said, “I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes.
- 26 Even so Father, because in this manner it seemed good in Your sight.
- 27 All things are delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son, except for the Father. Neither does anyone know the Father, except for the Son, and to the one whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
- 28 Come to Me, all you who labor and have a heavy burden, and I will give you rest.
- 29 Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, because, I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
- 30 Because, My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”
- 31 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
- 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, because, they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
- 33 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light.
- 34 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is single, your entire body also is full of light. But when your eye is corrupted, your body also is full of darkness.
- 35 Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.
- 36 If then your entire body is full of light, having no part dark, the entire body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”
- 37 And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat.
- 38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.
- 39 Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness.
- 40 You fools! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also?
- 41 But rather give charitable deeds of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.
- 42 “But woe to you Pharisees! Because you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
- 43 Woe to you Pharisees! Because, you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.
- 44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because, you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.”
- 45 Then one of the lawyers responded and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.”
- 46 And He said, “Woe to you also, you lawyers! Because, you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
- 47 Woe to you! Because, you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
- 48 In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; because, they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs.
- 49 Therefore the wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’
- 50 that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,
- 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Truly, I say to you, it will be required of this generation.
- 52 “Woe to you lawyers! Because, you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”
- 53 And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to contest Him vehemently, and to provoke Him to speak about many things,
- 54 lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something out of His mouth, that they might accuse Him.
