Bible translations into Italian

The Bible has been translated into Italian many times since the first printed translation, the Malermi Bible by Nicolò Malermi in 1471. The Bible of CEI (Conferenza Episcopale Italiana) is the official version of the Italian Catholic Church. Prior to the initial publication of the CEI edition in 1971, the most common Italian translation of the bible was that of Archbishop Antonio Martini, published from 17691781. The 1607 Italian translation by Giovanni Diodati is the standard reference used in Italian Protestantism; a revised edition of this translation in modern Italian, Nuova Diodati, was published in 1991.

Early translations

The first printed translation of the Bible into Italian was the Malermi Bible in 1471 from the Latin version Vulgate. Other early Catholic translations into Italian were made by the Domenican Fra Zaccaria of Florence in 1542 (the New Testament only) and by Santi Marmochino in 1543 (complete Bible).[1]

Protestant translations were made by Antonio Brucioli in 1530, by Massimo Teofilo in 1552 and by Giovanni Diodati in 1607 who translated the Bible from Latin and Jewish documents; Diodati's version is the reference version for Italian Protestantism. This edition was revised in 1641, 1712, 1744, 1819 and 1821. A revised edition in modern Italian, Nuova Diodati, was published in 1991.

The most used Catholic Bible translation in Italian before the 1971 CEI edition was that of Archbishop Antonio Martini. It was published from 1769 to 1771 (New Testament) and 1776 to 1781 (Old Testament), and it was formally approved by the papacy. It consists of parallel columns of Latin Vulgate and Italian with long and detailed notes based mainly on the Church Fathers writings. The translation is based on the Vulgate checked with the original Greek and Hebrew texts (Martini was assisted in interpreting the Old Testament by a rabbi). It also includes a list of the main textual variants for each book. In the 1870 edition, the notes were rewritten and shortened.[2]

From 1858–1860 the Jewish Samuel David Luzzatto translated part of the Old Testament into Italian.

  • Nuovissima versione edited by Edizione Paoline in 1987;

The Bible of CEI (Conferenza Episcopale Italiana) is the official version of the Italian Catholic Church. It was first printed in 1971 (editio princeps) as the work of only three translators in order to keep the text more consistent, and revised in 1974 (editio minor). A totally new version was published in 2008, after a revision of both the Testaments, that took into account newly discovered documents for the New Testament, was begun in 1997.

Comparison

Translation John (Giovanni) 3:16

King James Usage of Diodati

Chris Yetzer said:

Proof that the KJV translators considered Diodati's 1607 Italian Bible in their work.

In 1823 Henry Walter made some comparisons of editions of the Bible to the Authorized Verison and wrote in “A Letter to the Right Reverend Herbert, Lord Bishop of Peterborough” that the Authorized Version often followed Diodati, and did so more frequently than any other translation, “I shall also subjoin Diodati’s version, which our authorized translators have never been accused of copying, yet, they probably consulted, and will be found to agree with it, perhaps, more often than with any other.” There were certainly some limitations to Walter's comparisons, but there is still some truth to what he said - that the KJV translators did consult Diodati's 1607 Italian Bible.

John Bois' notes taken in the process of translating in the Addenda to Revelation, just one verse before the end of the notes is a comment on Revelation 7:15. Here is what it says:

Cap. 7. 15. σκηνώσει ἐπ᾿ αὐτούς] shall stretch his pavilion over them. Italian version. I would prefer, shall dwell with them, or, rest upon them. see below c. 21. 3.

Bois writes a Greek phrase from Revelation 7:15 followed by an English translation, followed by “Italian version” (written in Latin). Then he writes the translation that he would prefer in English. It must be noted that while it is not entirely obvious at first, the Italian version mentioned refers to the first English translation and not that which he prefers. When comparing the English versions used, they all read very similar to the phrases Bois preferred. There would be no reason to mention the Italian version if it read the same as all the other versions. This is the only place in the entire notes where an Italian version or for that matter any foreign language version (apart from English and Latin) is mentioned specifically. Therefore the reading must be something of consideration, but also unique. Below is a collation of many of the Italian versions’ readings at the above mentioned phrase in Revelation 7:15 up to 1611. There were about 7 major revisions before Diodati and around 80 different printings up to 1607. The list covers every major revision and 64 (+ 2 other sources outside of Bibles) printings up to Diodati’s 1607.

1651 Pious and Learned Annotations: that is, shall cover and defend them everlastingly from all evill. A manner of speech taken from the Pillar of cloud in the wildernesse.

The versions before Diodati read, “shall abide in them”, or “shall abide above/upon them.” Diodati is the only Italian Bible that reads like Bois’ note. Every other Italian Bible reads basically like Bois prefered. Therefore, it is 100% certain that the note refers specifically to Diodati’s Bible and not any other Italian version. With certainty Diodati’s 1607 Bible was on the table and in the hands of at least these translators during the translating of the King James Bible.[1]
