+ | Matthew 2:11 is the eleventh verse of the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. The magi, dispatched by King Herod, have found the infant Jesus and in this verse present him with gifts in an event known as the Visit of the Wise Men. In art, it is traditionally referred to as the Adoration of the Magi.

So all throughout the reformation in Matthew 2:11 they used "εἶδον", "εὗρον", and "invenerunt" side by side synonymously. Erasmus used "repererunt" (found) for "εὗρον" in 1516, but later editions say "invenerunt". I think because people tended to gravitate towards a strict number definitions when writing dictionaries, perhaps "εἶδον" became primarily "found" as is the modern Greek today, and the second meaning was lost. |

+ | ====Scrivener==== | ||
+ | Even though Scrivener changed Beza's “εὗρον” to “εἶδον,” it is of no real significance because both mean “invenerunt” in Latin. All throughout the reformation in Matthew 2:11 they used “εἶδον,” “εὗρον,” and “invenerunt” side by side. In his Latin, Erasmus used “repererunt” (found) for “εὗρον” in 1516, but later editions say “invenerunt”. The Complutensian used the different “εἶδον,” but still had had “invenerunt” in Latin.
+ | |||
+ | On Page 243 of The authorized edition of the English Bible (1611) its subsequent reprints and modern representatives by F. H. A. Scrivener Published 1884, it says that the Complutensian and the Bishops' have in place of "εἶδον" (for "εὗρον").
+ | |||
+ | The KJV translates εὗρον as 'I perceived' in "...Whom I perceived to be accused of..." in Acts 23:29. "I saw" and "I perceived" are very similar. Why wouldn't Scrivener think of changing it here also? Perhaps he is simply trying to incorporate Westcott and Hort readings into the TR.
+ | |||
+ | The concept of finding or discovering something is the act of seeing it. Many explorers found/discovered lands from their ship, but merely "saw" it and never set foot on it. A people can look into a telescope and have a new find when they simply saw something. I think the Complutensian Polyglot sided with the Latin, which is after all, a translation. Even the concept in Matthew 7:7 & 8 εὗρον is the result of seeking:
+ | |||
+ | :7 ...seek, and ye shall find; knock, and...
+ | :8 ...he that seeketh findeth; and...
+ | |||
+ | Also John 7: | ||
+ | |||
+ | :34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. 35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? 36 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
+ | |||
+ | In Revelation 16:20 it says:
+ | :And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
+ | Which is another example of found and seen being synonymous in certain contexts, "the mountains were not found" meaning they were no longer discoverable, visible, or able to be seen.
+ | |||
+ | Luke 23:4 says: | ||
+ | :Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
+ | |||
+ | To find means to discover, i.e. "to obtain the first knowledge or sight of what was before not known." But to "find, discover" something people already know about is not to "find" it, but rather "see" it. Thus the KJV translators used the correct word with see here.
+ | |||
+ | The Latin invenerunt is related to the English word invention. Middle English inventen, borrowed from Old French inventer, from Latin inventus, perfect passive participle of inveniō (“come upon, meet with, find, discover”), from in (“in, on”) + veniō (“come”); see venture. Compare advent, covent, event, prevent, etc.

Commentary
Matthew 2:11 is the eleventh verse of the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. The magi, dispatched by King Herod, have found the infant Jesus and in this verse present him with gifts in an event known as the Visit of the Wise Men. In art, it is traditionally referred to as the Adoration of the Magi.
- And when they had come into the house,
Καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν
- they saw the young Child with Mary His mother,
εὗρον τὸ παιδίον μετὰ Μαρίας τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ·
The verb εὗρον, (heûron), is a first-person singular/third-person plural aorist active indicative of εὑρίσκω (heurískō)
Luke 24:24 in the KJV has:
- And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found (εὗρον) it even so as the women had said: but him they saw (εἶδον) not.
Acts 23:29 uses "I perceived":
- Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.
Lectionary 1599
Minuscule 2
Minuscule 2, an 11th or 12th century manuscript, was used by Erasmus for his first edition of the Greek New Testament Novum Instrumentum omne. ειδον is the main reading, but it has ευρον in the margin in different ink, along with an underline of the main ειδον in the same ink.
Minuscule 474
According to the NA26, p. 4. Matthew 2:11 it reads ευρον for ειδον.
Erasmus
Erasmus in his 1519 annotations:
- Invenerunt puerum.) Minutula sunt & illa, quod Graece no παις est, sed παιδίον diminutiuum, quasi dicas puellum, quemadmodem, & superius, diligenter interrogate de proprimitiuis puero περὶ τοῦ παιδίου. At Paulo superius praecedebat eos προῆγεν, quod ita est, gaudium magnum Atticorum more dictum est, quod tamen latine vertit interpres. Etiam si Terentius dixit: Solidum gaudere gaudium. Et Vergilius, furere furorem . Item quod intrantes domum, pro ingressi domum, ἐλθόντες εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν. Nam quod πεσόντες, id est, prostrati, vertit procidetes, prope coactus fecit, & mollius est. Haec & id genus minu tula multa sciens praetereo, ne lectori sim fastidio.
Theodore Beza
The 1598 of Beza in the annotations has:
- Invenerunt, εὗρον. In omnibus vetustis exemplaribus scriptum legimus εἶδον, viderunt.
translated as
- Found εὗρον. In all ancient exemplars read εἶδον, saw.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary says:
- they saw-The received text has "found"; but here our translators rightly depart from it, for it has no authority.
The Complutensian Polyglot, Erasmus, Stephanus, Beza ALL translated "εὗρον" as invenerunt which shows they are synonyms meaning to be to find/uncover or to see. These four Greek/Latin bibles agree with the King James Version and demonstrate that the translators did use the 1598 of Beza.
"invēnērunt" is the third-person plural perfect active indicative of inveniō which means to - 1) find 2) discover
So all throughout the reformation in Matthew 2:11 they used "εἶδον", "εὗρον", and "invenerunt" side by side synonymously. Erasmus used "repererunt" (found) for "εὗρον" in 1516, but later editions say "invenerunt". The Complutensian used the different "εἶδον" but still had had "invenerunt" in Latin.
So even though Scrivener changes the "εὗρον" to "εἶδον" it is of no significance because both mean "invenerunt" in Latin. I think because people tended to gravitate towards a strict number definitions when writing dictionaries, perhaps "εἶδον" became primarily "found" as is the modern Greek today, and the second meaning was lost.
Many footnotes appear as the following:
- In here reading they saw, Com. Ver. rightly forsakes the text of both Stephens and Beza (who read ‘found,’ comp. Luke 2:16 ), being guided by Stephens’ statement of authorities and Beza’s note. It shows the same unusual independence in Mt 10:10 ‘staves’—though wrongly there—and in a few passages of other books (See Westcott and Abbott in Smith’s Dict., Am. ed. , p. 2132 note).
Dort Study Bible
The Dort Study Bible has:
- And being come into the house, they found the young child [Otherwise, they "saw"] with Mary his mother: falling down they worshipped the same. And having opened their treasures, they brought unto him gifts; Gold, and Frankincense, and Myrrhe.
- and fell down, and worshipped Him.
καὶ πεσόντες προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ,
- And when they had opened their treasures,
καὶ ἀνοίξαντες τοὺς θησαυροὺς αὐτῶν,
- they presented gifts to Him
προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δῶρα
A marginal note in the 1611 King James Version has
- presented: Or, offered
- gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
χρυσὸν, καὶ λίβανον, καὶ σμύρναν.
Gold - king, Frankincense - priest, myrrh - death (burial)
Scrivener
Even though Scrivener changed Beza's “εὗρον” to “εἶδον,” it is of no real significance because both mean “invenerunt” in Latin.
On Page 243 of The authorized edition of the English Bible (1611) its subsequent reprints and modern representatives by F. H. A. Scrivener Published 1884, it says that the Complutensian and the Bishops' have in place of "εἶδον" (for "εὗρον").
The KJV translates εὗρον as 'I perceived' in "...Whom I perceived to be accused of..." in Acts 23:29. "I saw" and "I perceived" are very similar. Why wouldn't Scrivener think of changing it here also? Perhaps he is simply trying to incorporate Westcott and Hort readings into the TR.
The concept of finding or discovering something is the act of seeing it.
- 7 ...seek, and ye shall find; knock, and...
- 8 ...he that seeketh findeth; and...
Also John 7:
- 34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.
In Revelation 16:20 it says:
- And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
Which is another example of found and seen being synonymous in certain contexts, "the mountains were not found" meaning they were no longer discoverable, visible, or able to be seen.
Luke 23:4 says:
- Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
To find means to discover, i.e. "to obtain the first knowledge or sight of what was before not known." But to "find, discover" something people already know about is not to "find" it, but rather "see" it. Thus the KJV translators used the correct word with see here.
The Latin invenerunt is related to the English word invention. Middle English inventen, borrowed from Old French inventer, from Latin inventus, perfect passive participle of inveniō (“come upon, meet with, find, discover”), from in (“in, on”) + veniō (“come”); see venture. Compare advent, covent, event, prevent, etc.
