John Chrysostom writes:

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness; God [θεός] was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit.
Here he speaks of the Dispensation in our behalf. Tell me not of the bells, nor of the holy of holies, nor of the high priest. The Church is the pillar of the world. Consider this mystery, and you may be struck with awe: for it is indeed a great mystery, and a mystery of godliness, and that without controversy or question, for it is beyond all doubt. Since in his directions to the Priests he had required nothing like what is found in Leviticus he refers the whole matter to Another, saying, God was manifest in the flesh. Isaac Newton

In An Historical Account of Two Notable Corruptions of Scripture (posthumously published in 1754), Isaac Newton argues that a small change to early Greek versions of this verse effectively changed "which" (referring to godliness) was changed to "God". This change increases textual support for trinitarianism, a doctrine to which Newton did not subscribe.

The R.V. prints “He Who” and adds in the margin “Theos (God) rests on no significant evidence.” The probability is that the original reading was ho (which) with the Syriac and all the Latin versions, to agree with muterion (neut.). The Gr. uncial being Ο, some scribe added the letter s, making ΟC (He Who), which he thought made better sense. Later another put a mark in this Ο, making the word ΘC, the contraction for ΘEOC, God. This mark in Codex A, in the Brittish Museum, is said by some to be in different ink.

Because it is impossible for Greek grammar to support these later conclusions, it has been theorized that this portion of scripture is a hymnic quotation, thus creating what is known as the Hymn Theory. While he NKJV may not change the word God, it does imply that verse is a hymn, thus giving credence to the false notion.

Furthermore, since the neuter relative pronoun ὅ must have arisen as a scribal correction of ὅς (to bring the relative into concord with μυστήριον), the witnesses that read ὅ (D* itd, g, 61, 86 vg Ambrosiaster Marius Victorinus Hilary Pelagius Augustine) also indirectly presuppose ὅς as the earlier reading. The Textus Receptus reads θεός, with אe (this corrector is of the twelfth century) A2 C2 Dc K L P Ψ 81 330 614 1739 Byz Lect Gregory-Nyssa Didymus Chrysostom Theodoret Euthalius and later Fathers. The reading θεός arose either (a) accidentally, through the misreading of ος as ΘΣ, or (b) deliberately, either to supply a substantive for the following six verbs, or, with less probability, to provide greater dogmatic precision."
