Commentary

Matthew 1:2 is the second verse of the first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. The verse is the first part of the section where the genealogy of Joseph, the legal father of Jesus, is listed.

All twelve of Judah's brothers were the ancestors of the tribe from which the messiah would come and thus were mentioned here. The inclusion of the brothers is thus a reminder to the readers that it is from this group where the messiah will come.

This same genealogy is presented in six different places in the Old Testament.

ἐγέννησε is translated as begat in the KJV 1611 and KJV 1900, and begot in the KJV 2023. From Middle English begeten, biȝeten, from Old English beġietan ‎(“to get, find, acquire, attain, receive, take, seize, happen, beget”), from Proto-Germanic *bigetaną ‎(“to find, seize”), equivalent to be- +‎ get. Cognate with Old Saxon bigitan ‎(“to find, seize”), Old High German bigezan ‎(“to gain, achieve, win, procure”).

Isaac's birth is a miraculous one according to the Old Testament, and thus there is some symmetry with both the first and last births mentioned in the genealogy being miraculous ones.

and his brethren

καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ

The KJV 'brethren' is changed to 'brothers' in the NKJV. But brethren means both brothers and sisters when that context warrants it. For example: Matthew 12:

47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. 48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? 49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Thus in context, Jesus' sisters here are also considered "brethren". In Matthew 1:2, the brethren included Dinah, the sister of Judah. Thus brothers is not as accurate as brethren.

Matthew's genealogy is considerably more complex than Luke's. It is overtly schematic, organized into three tesseradecads (sets of fourteen), each of a distinct character:

• The first is rich in annotations, including four mothers and mentioning the brothers of Judah and the brother Zerah of Perez.
• The second spans the Davidic royal line, but omits several generations, ending with "Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon."
• The last, which appears to span only thirteen generations, connects Joseph to Zerubbabel through a series of otherwise unknown names, remarkably few for such a long period.

The total of 42 generations is achieved only by omitting several names, so the choice of three sets of fourteen seems deliberate. Various explanations have been suggested: fourteen is twice seven, symbolizing perfection and covenant, and is also the gematria (numerical value) of the name David.
