Interlinear

Commentary

In this verse we have the fourfold activity of the church. The believers continued steadfastly in the teaching or doctrine of the apostles and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

(kai ‘and’) or a comma

The Textus Receptus teaches that there are four concepts divided up into two couplets separated by a comma:

1. apostle's doctrine
2. fellowship
3. breaking of bread
4. prayer

The critical text Greek makes this three

1. apostle's doctrine
2. fellowship in/of the breaking of bread
3. prayer

Metzger's Textual Commentary says:

"...The Latin text of codex Bezae read, with vg, syr(p) cop(sa,bo), 'in the fellowship of the breaking of bread'..."

The King James Version has:

“...and fellowship, and in breaking of bread...”

Modern Greek texts do not have the καί, but replace it with the comma. The 3rd edition of the UBS GNT does not even reference the variant reading. The Textus Receptus of Stephanus, Scrivener, 1904 Greek Orthodox, has basically:

τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ τῇ κοινωνίᾳ, καὶ τῇ κλάσει (Scrivener 1894)

whereas the critical text (1881, or Westcott and Hort, 1904 Nestle's, NA27th & 28th, Tischendorf's 8th) replaces the καὶ with a comma:

τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ τῇ κοινωνίᾳ, τῇ κλάσει

They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (NASB)

Although some TR based bibles also omit the "and" due to modern rules of English, such as the MEV, NKJV, and KJV 2016, the critical text based versions do so primarily because the Greek lacks the "and".
